There is something truly magical about watching a familiar high street transform right before your eyes. If you have ever strolled through Knutsford and admired its historic architecture, charming independent shops, and vibrant community spirit, get ready to see the town in a whole new light. On Sunday, 16 August 2026, the second annual Paint Knutsford open-air art competition returns, turning the town’s picturesque streets, hidden alleyways, and leafy squares into a buzzing, living art gallery!

Here at the East Cheshire Directory, we are always championing fantastic local events that bring our communities together. Whether you are an aspiring local artist, an avid art collector, or simply someone who loves soaking up a wonderful Sunday atmosphere with family and friends, this is one date for your diary that you simply won’t want to miss.

Let’s dive into what makes this year’s festival so special, where you can catch the action, and how you can get involved in the celebrations!

A Day of Creativity in the Open Air

The concept behind Paint Knutsford is as delightful as it is dynamic. Known in the art world as plein-air painting, the event challenges artists of all skill levels: from enthusiastic hobbyists to seasoned professionals: to capture the essence of Knutsford live on location.

The excitement kicks off sharply at 9:00 AM, when participating artists gather to have their blank canvases officially stamped. From that moment, the clock starts ticking! Painters have up to seven hours to fan out across the town, setting up their easels wherever inspiration strikes.

Walking through Knutsford on competition day feels like stepping inside a living masterpiece. You might turn a corner near King Street and find someone meticulously capturing the historic timber-framed buildings in delicate watercolors, or spot another artist on Silk Mill Street wielding bold oils to portray the bustling street scene. It’s an interactive, immersive experience where residents and visitors can chat with creators, watch brushstrokes come to life, and appreciate the town’s gorgeous architecture through fresh, creative eyes.

New Additions for 2026: Something for Everyone

Building on the tremendous success of its inaugural year, the 2026 festival introduces fantastic new activities that expand the creative horizon for participants and spectators alike.

1. Drawing in the Woods

For those looking to try something a little different, the festival is hosting Drawing in the Woods between 11:30 AM and 13:00 PM. Guided by Lisa from Life Drawing with Hop, this relaxed, clothed life-drawing session takes place in a tranquil woodland setting near the town. It is open to artists of all skill levels, offering a wonderful opportunity to practice observational drawing surrounded by nature. Tickets are priced at £10 and can be booked in advance via the Discover Knutsford platform.

2. Little Artists on the Moor

Creativity isn’t just for adults! Families will love Little Artists on the Moor, a free, drop-in art session designed especially for children. Running from 11:00 AM to 14:00 PM, this outdoor activity encourages younger minds to explore their artistic flair with paints, crafts, and imagination in a relaxed, welcoming environment. It’s a fantastic way to inspire the next generation of local Picassos.

The Hub of the Action: Knutsford Market Hall

As the afternoon progresses and the painting wraps up, all eyes turn toward the newly renovated Knutsford Market Hall. Starting at 4:30 PM, this modern community hub transforms into the official exhibition space and judging arena.

Artists bring their finished works back to the market hall, where a panel of judges will review the day’s creations and award prizes across various categories. For spectators, this is a phenomenal chance to view dozens of unique interpretations of Knutsford created in real-time.

That’s not all! At 2:00 PM, the Market Hall also hosts a special curated viewing featuring remarkable pieces from the Tabley House Collection and the Clarendon Fine Art Gallery. Art lovers will be thrilled to catch works by legendary artists like L. S. Lowry and a stunning reproduction of a J. M. W. Turner painting. It’s an elite cultural exhibition brought right to the heart of our local community.

Make a Full Day of It

A fantastic day out in Knutsford wouldn’t be complete without enjoying some of the region’s finest food and drink. Throughout the event, King Street and Silk Mill Street will be buzzing with alfresco dining and street-side hospitality.

Grab an outdoor table at one of the town’s superb independent cafes, bistros, or pubs. Sip a freshly brewed coffee while sketching in your own notebook, or enjoy a leisurely lunch while watching artists put the finishing touches on their masterpieces.
